Work leading to the reopening of a disused underpass on the edge of Milton Park is now in its final stages, with the next phase of the project set to be completed as soon as early-November.
The redevelopment of Backhill Tunnel – adjacent to the A4130 in west Didcot – will firstly see a pedestrian and cycle link beneath the existing railway embankment, linking the A-road into Milton Park.
The County Council will now undertake the final phases of works with pedestrian and cycle connections west along the A4130 towards Milton Gate. The final element of the project will see the creation of a crossing for pedestrians and cyclists across the A4130, adjacent to the tunnel.
The completion of the tunnel will enable several thousand people based at Milton Park, to either cycle or walk to-and-from work. In turn, this will reduce demand on the road network and support more healthy, active residents.
The tunnel will give workers at Milton Park better access to amenities on Milton Gate, including the recently announced four star Milton Marriott hotel which is due to open in summer 2018.

Building work has started on a four-star hotel at Milton Park. The luxury hotel is now being led by the Marriott chain rather than the La Tour group, which was initially signed up to pursue the project. The Marriott Courtyard hotel will have 170 beds, a lounge bar, restaurant with outdoor space, conference facilities and a gym.
Phillip Campbell, commercial director of MEPC Ltd, which runs Milton Park, said: “We are delighted that the Marriott brand is coming to Milton Gate. The new hotel will help meet the needs of Milton Park’s occupiers by providing superb overnight accommodation and conference facilities. It will also be beneficial to the local community and visitors to the Oxfordshire region.”
When initial drawings were released for the hotel in 2015, then-Didcot town councillor Margaret Davies described it as a ‘stunning building’, which ‘ looks like something out of Star Wars’.
In 2014, South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse district councils released a report, which highlighted ‘need for a significant increase in hotel supply in the Science Vale area through new hotel openings and the expansion of existing hotels’. The hotel scheme was granted planning permission under Milton Park’s Local Development Order, which allows development to be fast-tracked.
Piers Slater, chief executive of Reef Estates, which owns the site, said: “The hotel will provide a unique local experience for the business traveller, and a new destination for Didcot Garden Town.”
Building work on the hotel is expected to be completed in Autumn 2018.

Reef Estates has applied for planning permission to build the resort at Milton Park just outside Didcot.
The submission includes dramatic artist’s impressions of the L-shaped building, with a curving roof and a ground-floor restaurant, lit up at night.
Located just off the A34 the hotel could serve visitors to the whole of the so-called Science Vale area including Harwell and Culham science campuses.

A £24 million development at a science and business park will create 1,000 new jobs.
Work has already begun on one of the regions' largest speculative office and laboratory developments at Milton Park. The Park Drive East plans by park owners MEPC include three separate buildings made up of offices and two high-tech laboratories.
By developing the new workspaces for the science and technology sector, MEPC believes it will be able to create 1,000 new jobs, which supports Vale of White Horse and South Oxfordshire district councils' plans to deliver 20,000 new jobs in the next 20 years.
Chief executive officer at MEPC James Dipple said: "Milton Park is firmly established as an anchor destination for life sciences in our region, particularly due to its close links to nearby Oxford University and its life science division, which ranks first globally and therefore an attractive space for upcoming companies. Park Drive East will provide businesses with the opportunity to join an established community of like-minded businesses, helping to satisfy requirements from within our existing customer base. The buildings are designed and specified with a high level of flexibility in mind to appeal to science and technology companies embarking on research and development activities. We look forward to announcing new lettings at Park Drive East in the near future."
The development is on a 7.6-acre site at the eastern end of the science and business park and it falls within the Science Vale UK Enterprise Zone, which means businesses taking space in the new scheme can apply for business rates discounts of up to £275,000. Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd has been appointed to carry out the construction work.
Wantage MP Ed Vaizey said he was delighted that work was beginning on the 'groundbreaking' project.
He added: "I’m pleased to have been a part of this exciting project marking one of the largest speculative development builds in Oxfordshire. MEPC’s commitment to this project shows that Milton Park is still one of the top-performing Enterprise Zones in the country and I’m looking forward to seeing the life sciences cluster in Oxford grow as a result."
Milton Park, one of Europe’s largest business parks, already accommodates 8,500 people working in 250 organisations. Park owner MEPC is responsible for business estates that accommodate more than 350 organisations with thousands of people working in the manufacturing, science and technology sectors.
The office building is expected to be finished by the end of the year with the two remaining buildings to be finished by spring 2018.
